Jozef Macak

Jozef Macák is a Slovak street and documentary photographer based in Bratislava. His work focuses on everyday life, human interactions and the unexpected moments that emerge in public spaces. Travelling extensively, he has photographed across Europe, Asia and beyond, with a particular interest in places where life unfolds openly on the street. His approach is intuitive and observational. Rather than searching for perfect scenes, he is drawn to gestures, humour, unusual encounters and the small details that can turn an ordinary situation into a photograph. He enjoys exploring unfamiliar places without a fixed plan, following the rhythm of the street and allowing situations to develop naturally. His photography has received international recognition, including 1st place at the LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2025, 1st Prize in The Independent Photographer Street Photography Award, and 2nd place at the Eyeshot Open Call 2025. His work has also been selected and exhibited in numerous international photography competitions and festivals. During his photowalks, Jozef shares this way of working: how to explore a place, recognize promising situations, anticipate moments and get closer to the life happening around you. The focus is not only on making stronger individual photographs, but also on becoming more observant, reacting instinctively and developing your own way of seeing the street.
