Stefano Mirabella (Rome, 1973) is an Italian photographer and educator whose work moves between documentary and street photography. He began his photographic journey in 2003, initially focusing on social documentary projects in Asia and the Middle East. Since 2012, street photography has become the core of his creative and professional practice. A former member of the Italian street photography collective Spontanea and a winner of the Leica Talent Award in 2014, Stefano has been teaching photography for many years. He is currently an instructor at Leica Akademie Italy and Officine Fotografiche in Rome, leading workshops and courses dedicated to street photography, visual language and composition. His approach to street photography is based on a balance between chance and preparation. Rather than simply reacting to what happens in front of the camera, he encourages photographers to learn how to read a place before taking a picture: to observe light, backgrounds, gestures, relationships between people and the different layers of a scene. For Stefano, composition is not about applying rules, but about organizing the complexity of everyday life within the frame. This way of working is particularly connected to Istanbul. Over the past two and a half years, Stefano has travelled to the city seven times, returning regularly to photograph its streets and develop an ongoing long-term project. Istanbul has gradually become more than a destination for him: it is a place he continues to explore photographically, learning its rhythms, recurring situations and visual possibilities with every visit. During the photowalk, participants will experience this approach directly in the streets. Rather than following a route based only on iconic locations, the walk will focus on areas and situations that offer opportunities to work with the unpredictable nature of street photography. Stefano will share how he observes a scene, chooses a position, works with backgrounds and light, anticipates movement and decides when to wait and when to move on. Working with a small group also makes it possible to create a more personal experience. Stefano will photograph alongside the participants, observe how they approach situations and offer practical suggestions in real time, adapting the experience to different levels and individual ways of seeing. The aim is not to reproduce Stefano’s photographs or style, but to help each participant become more aware of what is happening inside and around the frame—to slow down when necessary, recognize visual relationships and transform ordinary situations into more complex and personal photographs. Istanbul, with its extraordinary density, contrasts and constant movement, provides the perfect environment for this kind of exploration: a city where chance is everywhere, but where learning to be prepared can make all the difference.
