Giedo van der Zwan

Giedo van der Zwan (1967) is a Dutch street photographer known for his vibrant, humorous and meticulously timed images of everyday life. Although he studied economics, his fascination with photography eventually led him away from the corporate world toward a fully creative career. After years of exploring wildlife, travel, portrait and abstract photography, he discovered street photography in 2017—a genre that perfectly matched his curiosity about people and the unexpected beauty of ordinary moments. Giedo’s photographs are immediately recognizable for their bold use of color, layered compositions and frequent use of flash. He works close to his subjects, capturing fleeting interactions, visual coincidences and subtle absurdities that often go unnoticed in daily life. His images balance wit with empathy, offering an optimistic perspective on humanity while inviting viewers to pause, smile and look more carefully at the world around them. In 2018, Giedo gained international recognition with his self-published photobook 'Pier to Pier', a playful and affectionate exploration of Dutch beach culture. The accompanying exhibition was displayed for six months on Scheveningen Pier and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors. Since then, his work has been exhibited in museums, galleries and international street photography festivals across Europe, North America and Latin America, and has appeared regularly in lnational newspapers as well as eading photography publications, including the 'British Journal of Photography'. His photographs have received numerous international awards at festivals in cities such as London, Paris, Brussels, Rome, Miami and Trieste. In the Netherlands, he has twice been honored with the prestigious Zilveren Camera- award, recognizing outstanding documentary and visual storytelling. Beyond creating his own work, Giedo is passionate about sharing his approach to photography. In 2024, he founded 'Shoot with a Local' an international workshop collective that brings together talented local photographers to offer immersive street photography experiences in inspiring cities around the world. Rather than simply visiting a destination, participants learn to photograph it through the eyes of someone who truly knows its streets, neighborhoods and culture. For Giedo, street photography is more than making compelling images—it is a way of connecting with people and understanding the world. As he puts it: “Street photography requires all my artistic and intellectual skills. It is also therapeutic for me. And perhaps most importantly, it introduces me to some of the most inspiring people I know.”
