Murat Harmanlıklı is an Istanbul-based street photographer whose work explores the subtle relationships between people, light, and urban life. His photography is driven by observation, patience, and an instinct for finding extraordinary moments within everyday life. Working primarily in the streets of Istanbul, he creates poetic visual narratives that balance humor, emotion, and ambiguity while reflecting the city's ever-changing rhythm. His photographs often reveal unexpected connections, fleeting gestures, layers of meaning that emerge from ordinary scenes. Rather than documenting the city, he seeks to capture its atmosphere, inviting viewers to slow down and rediscover the poetry hidden in everyday life.
Murat Harmanlikli is an Istanbul-based street and portrait photographer deeply inspired by human presence, literature, and the layered narratives of urban life. He holds a degree in Economics from Marmara University. His journey into photography began in 1996, but it wasn’t until 2007—after a hiatus due to his master’s studies and professional life—that he fully immersed himself in the craft, developing and printing his own black-and-white photographs in his personal darkroom. Since 2016, he has continued his photographic work with digital cameras, maintaining a focus on the poetic rhythm of the streets and the emotional depth of human expression. His work is rooted in quiet observation, empathy, and storytelling. He is heavily influenced by literature, believing that the inner worlds of fictional characters and the visual atmospheres of novels are just as powerful—if not more so—than photographs in shaping imagination and reflecting one’s personal vision. As a modern-day flâneur, he sees the act of walking through crowds not only as a way of connecting with the city but also as a path to endless photographic discovery. His work has received recognition through various international awards and features, including honors from LensCulture, The Independent Photographer, Life Framer, IPA, All About Photo, Eyeshot Magazine, etc.
Explore the streets of Istanbul through a slower, more attentive way of seeing. This guided photo walk is designed for photographers of all levels who want to experience the city beyond its landmarks and discover the beauty hidden in everyday moments. *** As we walk together, I will share my approach to street photography—how I observe light, anticipate moments, simplify complex scenes, and build strong compositions. Along the way, you'll receive individual guidance and practical feedback tailored to your experience and photographic interests. *** During the photo walk, we will focus on: *Observing authentic, unposed moments *Seeing and using natural light creatively *Finding strong compositions in busy environments *Reading gestures, expressions, and human interactions *Building confidence when photographing in public *Learning to anticipate meaningful moments *Developing your own way of seeing rather than copying someone else's style *** This is not about rushing from one location to another or photographing famous landmarks. It is about slowing down, becoming more aware of your surroundings, and learning to recognize the small moments that often go unnoticed. By the end of the walk, you'll leave not only with new photographs, but with a fresh perspective on how to see—and photograph—the city.

We discuss anticipation, visual rhythm, layering, gesture, and the decisive moment—learning not only how to recognize meaningful scenes, but how to position yourself and respond instinctively when they unfold. *** My teaching approach is rooted in storytelling. I believe compelling street photography goes beyond technical perfection or composition alone. It is about perception—recognizing subtle human connections, discovering beauty in ordinary moments, and creating photographs that invite viewers to pause, look again, and find their own stories within the frame.
